Two things go wrong with camping fans. The cheap ones are noisy and run flat by 22:00. The good ones are the size of a suitcase and never come out of the garage. The Kampi Foldaway Camp Fan was picked to solve both: it collapses into its own base, it runs off a battery you top up from any USB-C port, and on the low setting it is quiet enough to sleep next to.
It is just as useful at home. When the power goes, the fan does not – and it charges back up from the same power bank you use for your phone.
Table height, or floor height
The telescopic column runs from 40cm folded to 105cm extended, and locks anywhere in between. On the camp table it points at your face across a game of cards; on the ground next to a stretcher it moves air over the whole tent. The head tilts through 200 degrees, so you can also aim it straight up at a rooftop tent.
Four speeds, from a whisper up
Five blades and four wind settings – breeze, soft, strong and natural – with 65 degree oscillation to spread the air rather than blast one person. The low setting runs from 12 dB, which is below the sound of your own breathing, and there is a 4-hour timer so it does not run all night if you drop off. The remote is in the box, so you are not climbing out of the sleeping bag to change speed.
Charges off anything with USB-C
Power bank, laptop, wall plug, or the inverter on the caravan’s dual battery – if it has a USB-C port, it charges this fan. A full charge takes 4 to 6 hours and the 1.5m USB-C cable is included. It will also run while it is plugged in.
Folds into its own base
The head drops, the column collapses and the whole thing becomes a 22cm x 10.5cm disc. That is a caravan cupboard, a drawer, the gap behind the seat, or the top of the ammo box – not a boot full of fan.
