Zimbabwe Cross-Border Sticker Kit

Vic Falls, Hwange or Mana Pools? Zimbabwe’s vehicle-marking rules are written into law, the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use) Regulations, 2015 (SI 129 of 2015), and the roadblocks enforce them on foreign vehicles. The Kampi Zimbabwe cross-border sticker kit carries the reflective markings those regulations require on a South African vehicle and trailer, with a placement guide built from the SI itself, not from hearsay.

What is in the kit

• ZA country identifier oval for the rear of the rearmost vehicle (required under the international conventions Zimbabwe recognises).
• Honeycomb-grade white and red reflective pieces for the towing vehicle. The SI requires honeycomb or diamond grade; they are the same technology, “Diamond Grade” is 3M’s name for it.
• T-signs for the trailer: one white, one red, sized to the regulation.
• Continuous red reflective strip for the trailer rear.
• Printed fitment and placement guide.

Where each piece goes (per SI 129 of 2015)

On the towing vehicle

• Front: two white reflectors, one within 400 mm of each side, at the same height, mounted between 300 mm and 1.2 m above the ground (s39).
• Rear: two red reflectors, same positions and heights (s39).

On the caravan or trailer

• ZA oval: rear, right-hand side, clear of the number plate.
• White T-sign on the front, red T-sign on the rear (rear T no higher than 1.2 m). The regulation size is at least 150 mm high by 120 mm wide with 50 mm strokes on a black backing (s41), which is what this kit supplies.
• Continuous red reflective strip across the rear, extending to within 400 mm of each edge of the trailer (s41).
• Amber side strips only if the rig is long: continuous amber side reflectors apply to vehicles over 8 m and heavy vehicles (s40). Most caravan combinations under 8 m do not need them, but they never hurt.

How to fit your stickers

1. Clean and dry the panel with soapy water, then wipe with a little methylated spirits so the adhesive grips.
2. Fit in mild shade, not full midday sun: the vinyl sits flatter and the glue cures better between 15°C and 25°C.
3. Peel slowly, lay one edge down first, then smooth from the centre outwards with a cloth or squeegee to push out air bubbles.
4. Press the reflective pieces down hard for 30 seconds and leave them 24 hours before a wash or a long highway run.

Triangles: the rule that actually catches people

Section 52 requires two reflective breakdown triangles per vehicle, plus two more for the trailer, so a towing rig needs four. The section that exempts foreign vehicles from some equipment rules does not cover triangles, so carry them. Add a pair with the options above.

Recommended, not required

• Fire extinguisher, spare wheel and tools: section 53 requires these of Zimbabwean vehicles (0.75 kg extinguisher for a light vehicle) but explicitly exempts foreign-registered vehicles on temporary entry. Officers at roadblocks still ask, and an extinguisher is cheap insurance in a caravan, so we recommend carrying one; just know the law does not compel you.
• Reflective safety vests: not in the SI, but sensible on the N1 shoulder at dusk. Add a set with the options above.
• Third-party insurance, the temporary import permit, carbon tax and the road access fee are handled at the border. Carry your vehicle registration papers, and a police clearance letter for vehicle and trailer is often requested, especially at Chirundu.
