Same 5-inch wireless system as our magnetic towing camera, with a different camera on the back. Instead of a battery and a magnet, this one has a steel U-bracket and a 12-24V power lead. You fit it once and leave it there.
It suits you if the caravan always goes behind the same vehicle, or if there’s no steel at the back of your rig for a magnet to grab. It also costs less.
Why tow with a camera
Without one, the caravan blocks everything behind you and the mirrors only cover the sides. With the camera on you can see what’s following you, whether that bakkie is about to overtake, and how close the wall is when you reverse into a stand. I towed with the magnetic version of this system recently and I’d tell anyone pulling a caravan to get one.
Fitting
The camera needs a 12-24V feed at the back of the caravan. Tapping into the caravan’s battery or a light circuit is a short job for an auto electrician, or an afternoon if you’re handy with a multimeter. Only the power is wired. The picture goes over the air, so there’s no video cable running the length of the caravan and through the tow plug.
Pick a feed that’s live while you drive, not the reverse light, if you want the view for the whole trip and not only when you’re backing up.
The screen
The 5-inch monitor sticks to the windscreen with its suction cup and runs off 12-24V, so it works in a bakkie, an SUV or a truck. The picture is 800 x 480 and the screen is rated at 500 cd/m², which is bright enough to read in daylight. Camera and screen talk over a digital 2.4GHz link that is rated to 400m in the open. Behind a caravan you need a tiny fraction of that.
Room for a second camera
The screen takes two cameras. Add a second one (part RCS402) on the side of the caravan or the front of a boat and the screen splits in two. Mail us and we’ll quote you.
